Keep bugs away, without the DEET. This non-toxic alternative to regular pest spray smells great and actually works—we’ve tried it.

Why should you use natural bug spray?

Our skin is our largest organ, so it makes sense that we want to be mindful of what we put on it. While natural products can vary in efficacy, their main benefit is that they are completely free from toxic and synthetic ingredients. Especially in the warmer months when we are using bug spray a lot, it can be really nice to use a version that you do not have to worry about the contents of.

What is DEET?

DEET (N, N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) is a chemical that was created by USDA chemists in the 1940s. Findings about the issues with using DEET are mixed. The Environmental Protection Agency has a report stating that DEET exposure is not a serious risk to our health; meanwhile, the National Library of Medicine has an article outlining that the chemical may pose a risk to humans. The bottom line? Do what you feel comfortable with, and when in doubt, go natural. But also keep in mind that if you are going somewhere known to have serious-disease-carrying mosquitoes, doctors do recommend chemical repellents to reduce your chances of contraction.
