Carpets see a lot of action—especially if you have kids potentially dropping food or dogs that like to sprawl out after a trip to the beach. No matter what your living room looks like on a daily basis, it’s worthwhile to give your carpet a simple refresh every week (or every other week).

We’ve put together a four-ingredient carpet deodorizer that uses refreshing, uplifting scents to neutralize those less-than-pleasant odours your carpet might pick up. All it involves is a quick sprinkle and a vacuum.

REFRESHING CARPET DEODORIZER

1 cup baking soda

30 drops Cedarwood Essential Oil

20 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil

10 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil

How to use it

  1. Mix the baking soda and essential oils in a small bowl, making sure you get rid of the clumps of oils.
  2. Using a shaker (you can make one by puncturing small holes in the lid of a Mason jar), carefully pour the baking soda mixture over the carpet or rug that you want to freshen up. (You could also simply use a spoon and sprinkle over the area.)
  3. Allow the solution to sit for 20 minutes minimum (the longer the better—two hours is a great amount).
  4. Vacuum up the baking soda from the carpet.
  5. Enjoy that fresh smell.
